Collection relating to the First World War service of Major Frederick Leslie Biddle DSO, 2 Field Artillery Brigade, Egypt, Gallipoli and France, 1914-1917. Collection consists of seventy-five letters written by Biddle to his family in Australia. Major Biddle died on 18 August 1917 in Belgium.
Biographical note: Major Fred Leslie Biddle, DSO, 2 Brigade, Australian Field Artillery. Died of wounds, Belgium, 17 August 1917. Age 31. Son of James and Helena Isabel Biddle, of 92 Vale St., East Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Other biographical details concerning him are - warehouseman of East Melbourne, Victoria; born Clifton Hill, Victoria; 27 October 1885; educated at Hawthorn (Vic) College; matriculated twice at Melbourne University; joined the CMF artillery as a gunner and had 10 years service being commissioned on 20 October 1910 and promoted captain on 1 September 1913; appointed a captain in the AIF on 18 August 1914 and promoted temporary major on 12 March 1916; wounded at Pozieres on 24 July 1916 and again (mortally) on 16 August 1917.
