Description

Collection relating to service of Lieutenant Henry Francis Briggs, 14 Machine Gun Company, Egypt, Gallipoli and France, 1915-1916. Collection includes extracts from letters sent home to family in England. Copies made 1928 by Australia House in London in response to request by Australian War Memorial for material from Briggs' family. Lt Briggs died on 20 July 1916.

History / Summary

Lieutenant Henry Francis Briggs, 14 Machine Gun Company, AIF, who on 20 July 1916 was killed in action during the Battle of Fromelles. Other biographical details concerning him are:- mercery salesman, of Sydney; born Brighton, Sussex, England, 25 February 1891; educated at Finsbury Road school, Brighton; served in the Sussex Artillery (Territorials); came to Australia when 26 years old; enlisted in the AIF on 17 August 1914, and posted to machine gun section of 3 Battalion; promoted corporal, 7 April 1915; sergeant, 18 May 1915; transferred to 55 Battalion, 13 February 1916; taken on strength of 14 Machine Gun Company on 12 March 1916, and appointed 2nd Lieutenant; passed first class in examination as instructor in Vickers and Maxim machine guns, Zeitoun, 31 March to 20 April 1916.
