History / Summary

According to Cheney's sister Mrs E. M. Brailey, Mitcham, SA, (AWM93 0012/0011/0756 letter 19 March 1928), Cheney gave this talk while in London on leave.

Biographical note: Born Northallerton, Yorkshire, England; educated at Heathside School, Warrington, Lancashire; served British Army Service Corps (Territorials); came to Australia aged 21 years; worked as a clerk and joined the Australian Imperial Force 28 August 1914. Cheney travelled aboard the Ascanius from Adelaide. He landed at ANZAC on 25 April 1915 with 10 Battalion, and transferred to 50 Battalion (probably with his brother, Lieutenant Edward Lloyd Cheney MC) in Egypt in 1916. Cheney was killed in action, 2 April 1917, at Noreuil, while Lieutenant Edward Lloyd Cheney MC died of wounds 12 March 1918.
