Collection relating to service of General Sir Herbert Vaughan Cox, GCB KCMG CSI, 49 Indian Infantry Brigade and 4 Division Australian Imperial Force, Egypt, Gallipoli and France, 1915-1916. Collection includes typewritten copies of diary extracts and copies of letters of congratulation covering Cox's active service as Brigade and Divisional Commander.

History / Summary

Cox comments on the Australian soldier, his fighting ability and fondness for sports and gambling in a number of extracts from his letters home. The diary entries for the same period indicate Cox's location and activities, but the letters contain more reflection and personal opinion.

Biographical note: General, Gcb, KCMG, Csi 1. 49th Indian Inf Brig 2. 4th Div, AIF. Commanded 4 Australian Division during 1916/ Died on 8 October 1923. General Cox, an officer of the Indian Army, was born at Watford, Hertfordshire, England, 12 July 1860; eldest son of Rev. F Cox, Rector of Upper Chelsea; educated at Charterhouse School, London and at Sandhurst Military College; received his commission as a second-lieutenant in the King's Own Scottish Borderers, 1880; joined Indian Army, 1883, and in 1914 was commanding the 2nd (Nowshera) Infantry Brigade; commanded 29th Indian Infantry Brigade in Arabia, Egypt, and Gallipoli in 1914-1915 and 4 Australian Division in 1916 in Egypt and France; was Secretary of the Military Department, India Office, London, from 1917-1921.
