History / Summary
This collection reveals George Henry Gates as a good-humoured, optimistic young man who appreciated the comforts of his home and the company of his family. He wrote with affection and warmth to his mother, showing great interest in the day to day affairs of his home, and of his church. His letters reflect a pride in his achievements in the army and a strong sense of duty, coupled with a longing for his home and a peaceful life.
Biographical notes: 7572 Sergeant George Henry Gates, MM, 34 Battalion, AIF, who on 20 August 1918 was killed in action on the Somme. Plumber; of Petersham; born Petersham; educated at Summer Hill Public School and at Sydney Technical College; was a Sergeant Major in the Citizen Forces; joined the AIF on 16 February 1917; age at time of death, 24.
