Description
Collection relating to the service of 2155 Private Mark John Griffiths, 20 Battalion, AIF, Gallipoli, Egypt, France. Collection includes letters written by Private Griffiths to various members of his family in Australia between November 1915 and July 1916.
History / Summary
This collection of letters reveals Private Griffiths' initial bitter disillusionment with army life, as well as his disdain for Australian men who refused to enlist, and for the British government of the day. His correspondence displays a considerable (and largely accurate) understanding of the probable course of the war, given his age, rank and occupation.
Biographical note: 2155 Private M. J. Griffiths, 20 Battalion, AIF, who on 26 July 1916 was killed in action at Pozieres. Other biographical details concerning him are; clerk; of St. Peters, NSW; born Newtown, NSW, educated at the Superior Public School, Tempe, NSW, served in the Senior Cadets (Area 35B), CMF, joined the AIF on 10 July 1915; age at time of death, 20 years 11 months.
