Description

Collection relating to the service of Major Hubert Richard Joseph Harris, AAMC. Collection consists of 25 handwritten pages of Major Harris's memories of his wartime experiences as a Medical Officer. Harris was often attached to field artillery batteries, and was present at the Battle of Pozieres. During the Battle of Polygon Wood he supervised evacuation of wounded along the Menin Road.

Biographical note: Major H R J Harris, AAMC. Born 1888, Sydney, NSW, enlisted 27 July 1915. Taken on strength of 2 Australian General Hospital 2 September 1915. To Gallipoli; left Gallipoli December 1915. 29 February 1916 - attached to 2 AFA Brigade; 28 March 1916 - disembarked Marseilles; 1 February 1917 - taken on strength 2 Field Ambulance; 3 February 1917 - 1.1 South Midland CC Station; 24 March 1917 - measles; 3 April 1917 - rejoined 2 Field Ambulance; 13 May - 10 June, 1917 - Medical Officer 11 Battalion; 24 August 1917 - Major; 30 September 1917 - 2 Auxiliary Hospital; 3 April - Convalescent Depot, Havre; 21 May 1918 - 2 Tunnelling Company; 3 October - embarked for Australia.
