Hogue, Oliver (Major, b.1880 - d.1919)

Collection relating to the service of Major Oliver Hogue, 14 Australian Light Horse, Gallipoli, Egypt, Palestine. Collection includes original letters written by Major Hogue to his family and friends in Australia, particularly to his journalist colleague, W. Farmer Whyte, between May 1915 and December 1918. Collection also includes a testimonial to the late Oliver Hogue by an anonymous journalist friend.

This collection gives an insight into Oliver Hogue the journalist and writer, more than Hogue the soldier. His letters to W. Farmer Whyte, his colleague at the Sydney Morning Herald, are largely concerned with publication of his books. Hogue, who was an unsuccessful candidate for the job of Australia's official correspondent to the war, was an admirer of C E W Bean, whom he describes as "absolutely straight & sincere & honest". Hogue wrote passionately about the work of the Australians in the Imperial Camel Corps, whom he felt were unfairly ignored by the British press.
