History / Summary

Biographical note: Lieutenant Colonel Eliazar Lazar Margolin, DSO. Merchant of Collie, Western Australia; born Bielgorod, Koorsk Province, Russia, 26 March 1875; was a Lieutenant in the 86th Infantry, CMF; joined the AIF on 1 October 1914 as a Lieutenant and was posted to the 16th Battalion; 22 December 1914 - embarked from Australia with 16 Battalion; promoted Captain; 2 May 1915 - wounded at Anzac; 5 May 1915 - promoted Major; 8 June 1917 - transferred to 14 Battalion and promoted temporary Lieutenant Colonel; 1 September 1917 - returned to 16 Battalion and relinquished temporary rank of Lieutenant Colonel; 18 March 1918 - resigned his commission in AIF and joined the British Army, being appointed Lieutenant Colonel and Commanding Officer of the 38th (Jewish) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, and serving in Palestine until the end of the war.
