Description

Collection relating to the service of 13629 Lance Corporal Edward Charles Henry Munro, MM, 5 Australian Field Ambulance, AIF, 1916-1918. Collection consists of: (1) a handwritten memoir compiled by Edward Munro in 1931, incorporating diaries he kept while on active service, May 1916 to June 1917; (2) a typescript copy of his diary entries from September to November 1918, describing his homeward journey aboard SS Runic; (3) a photocopy of a letter of condolence sent to Mrs. Jane M. S. Munro, of Burpengary, Queensland, by Lieutenant General (later Field Marshall) William Birdwood, in August 1918.

History / Summary

This collection is notable for its first-hand account of the experiences of a stretcher bearer on the Western Front in 1916 and 1917, particularly the second attack on Bullecourt (May 1917).
