Collection consists of 159 letters written by Sergeant George Murray while on active service, to various members of his family in Australia.

History / Summary

Biographical note: 1379 Sergeant George Alexander Hugh Murray, 14 Battalion, AIF. Killed in action 30 March 1918. Age 23, in France. Son of William and Elizabeth Murray, of Warracknabeal, Victoria, Australia. Other biographical details concerning him are: Driver, of Warracknabeal, Victoria; born Warracknabeal, educated at Warracknabeal State School, became a bank clerk and later studied electrical engineering; served on the Citizen Forces; joined the AIF on 8 October 1914; was wounded at Anzac; killed in action at Heburterne, France. Aged 23.

Numerous letters in this collection were written from Woodcote Park Military Convalescent Hospital, Epsom.
