Collection relating to the service of 183 Sergeant Joseph Marmion Ranford, 3 Light Horse Regiment, AIF, Egypt, Gallipoli, Malta, 1915. Collection consists of a typescript copy of a diary kept by Ranford from May to December 1915, and is notable for the entries describing his experiences on Gallipoli.

History / Summary

Biographical note: Joseph Marmion Ranford was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ranford of Semaphore, South Australia. He was born at Port Adelaide and was 35 years old when he was killed in action at the Battle of Romani, Egypt, 4th August, 1916. He was shot through the breast and died about 40 minutes after being wounded. His younger brother Clement was also in the Battle of Romani, and he was with his brother when he died. Joseph Marmion Ranford volunteered in Australia for the South African (Boer) War, served in South Africa during the greater part of the war and received a slight wound.
