Collection relating to the service of Captain Ralph Ratnevelu Raymond Ekin-Smyth, 52 Battalion (and previously of 32 Battalion), AIF, Egypt, 1916. Collection consists of a typed copy of a letter written by Captain Ekin-Smyth to a friend named Jim (probably a work colleague from the Customs office in Adelaide). History / Summary
Captain Ralph Ratnevelu Raymond Ekin-Smyth, 52 Battalion, AIF, who on 3 September 1916 was killed in action during an attack on Mouquet Farm (Pozieres). Other biographical details concerning him are: Customs Officer; of Adelaide, South Australia; born London, 1 May 1875; came to Australia when 9 years old; educated at Sturt Street Public School, Adelaide; was a commissioned officer from February 1899 in Commonwealth forces (militia). Son of Thomas G and Mary J Ekin Smyth, husband of Hilda M Ekin Smyth of Ranelagh Street, Woodville Park, South Australia
