Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of 4771 Sergeant Charles James Smith, 20 Battalion, France. Collection consists of letters describing the voyage and a few cases of attempted suicide. Smith outlines conditions in France, in the line and in hospital. He gives a detailed description of his leave in England. Also included are eight letters relating to Smith's death in action on 8 April 1918, and a inventory of his personal effects.
