Description

Collection relating to the First World war service of 3019 Sergeant Cecil Charles Harpur Baldwin MM, 3 Battalion, Western Front. Collection consists of six letters written by Baldwin to his mother, in which he describes his experiences including 'listening' duty in the trenches at night; laying barbed wire; and the awarding of the Military Medal for action at the Battle of Pozieres in August 1916. In all of his letters home to his mother, he takes great effort to portray a positive experience as to mitigate her worrying. Also included is a condolence letter from Field Marshal Birdwood to Baldwin's mother and a commemorative scroll. Baldwin was killed in action on 2 March 1917 near Bapaume.
