Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 201 Company Quartermaster Sergeant Alfred Leslie Guppy, 14th Infantry Battalion. Collection consists of a typed extract from a diary kept by Guppy between 22 December 1914 and September 1917. It covers his enlistment, training in Egypt, service on Gallipoli as well as on the Western Front in France and Belgium. The period between 29 March and 19 November 1916 is missing from the diary. The last section of the diary contains his personal notes about his capture at the Battle of Bullecourt in April 1917 and subsequent incarceration as a prisoner of war of the Germans. Biographical information: Guppy served almost all of the war with 14th Infantry Battalion. He was present at the landing at Gallipoli, the attacks during May and August and was evacuated in December. He returned to Australia in 1919 and also served in the Second World War.
