Description

SYDNEY, NSW. STARBOARD BOW VIEW OF THE STORE CARRIER (FORMER MINESWEEPER) HMAS BOMBO. THE SHIP'S APPEARANCE WAS CHANGED CONSIDERABLY WHEN SHE WAS CONVERTED FOR NAVAL SERVICE. A MAST HAS BEEN STEPPED IN PLACE OF A DISTINCTIVE CRANE AMIDSHIPS. A SMALL MAINMAST WAS STEPPED AFT. THE VENTILATOR COWLINGS ABAFT THE BRIDGE HAVE BEEN HEIGHTENED. A BANDSTAND HAS BEEN FITTED FORWARD FOR A 12 POUNDER GUN. HER APPEARANCE WAS FURTHER ALTERED WHEN SHE WAS CONVERTED TO A STORE CARRIER. MUCH OF THE MINESWEEPING EQUIPMENT AFT HAS BEEN LANDED. THE RATLINES WHICH ORIGINALLY SUPPORTED THE MAST AMIDSHIPS HAVE BEEN REMOVED TO ENABLE THE FITTING OF PLATFORMS FOR 20 MM OERLIKON AA GUNS AND A PAIR OF CARLEY FLOATS. DERRICKS HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE MAST AND A SHIELD TO THE 12 POUNDER GUN. TWO MORE CARLEY FLOATS HAVE BEEN ADDED AFT. IN A FINAL ALTERATION OF HER APPEARANCE VENTILATOR COWLINGS HAVE BEEN ADDED BEFORE AND BESIDE THE BRIDGE SUPERSTRUCTURE, PRESUMABLY BECAUSE SHE WAS INTENDED FOR SERVICE IN THE TROPICS. THE BOMBO CARRIED PENNANT NUMBER FY12 AND DISTINGUISHING LETTERS BB DURING HER SERVICE WITH THE RAN. (NAVAL HISTORICAL COLLECTION)
