On the steps of Admiralty House, the Governor General Lord Denham receives Rear Admiral Sir George Patey (right) and Admiral Sir George King-Hall (left), after the arrival of the Australian Squadron on 4 October 1913. Rear Admiral Sir George Patey, Flag Officer Commanding the Australian Squadron, on board the battlecruiser HMAS Australia lead the rest of the ships of the Royal Australian Navy through the heads into Sydney Harbour on 4 October 1913 escorted by the cruisers HMAS Sydney, HMAS Melbourne and HMS Encounter, on loan from the Royal Navy, and the destroyers HMAS Parramatta, HMAS Warrego and HMAS Yarra. As the Australian Squadron steamed into the harbour past the ships of the Royal Navy's Australian Station, Admiral Sir George King-Hall, the last Flag Officer Commanding the Royal Navy's Australia Station, lowered his flag, handing over command of the Australia Station to the RAN. Admiral Sir George King-Hall should not be confused with his brother, Admiral Sir H. G. King-Hall, Commander in Chief, Cape of Good Hope Squadron during the First World War. (Naval Historical Section)
