Description

Collection comprises thirteen detailed diaries kept by Major General Downes covering his service with the Australian Army Medical Corps at Gallipoli, France and Palestine and manuscript copies of letters written by Major General Downes from Gallipoli. Also included are a small collection of notes made by Major General Downes in preparation for the writing of the Official Medical History (1939-1945), a task that he was unable to complete due to his death in an aircraft crash on 5 March 1945.
