Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of VX45273 Major Julian Johnstone Searby, 2/9 Field Ambulance and prisoner of war, Singapore, 1942-1945.

Wallet 1 of 1 - contains a handwritten manuscript in the form of a diary, written on the back of old blank printed Naval Message forms. The first two pages commence in January 1941 with Searby leaving Sydney for his overseas journey. The remaining 130 pages re-commence on 17 February 1942 following the fall of Singapore and the surrender of Australian troops, and provide a personal narrative of Searby's life in Caldecott Road Camp and Changi, until news of their imminent liberation in August 1945.

Also contains another handwritten manuscript also written on the back of old blank printed Naval Message forms, tied together with tape. This manuscript contains notes and drawing relating to lectures and the study of Heraldry. These lectures may have been given in 1945 by Major Withers Payne, the Deputy Judge Advocate General, Far East. The manuscript includes diagrams and drawings of coats of arms and other armorial bearings and heraldic symbols.

Oversize item - hand drawn map of Singapore. This map is mentioned on the third page of the personal narrative.
