Description

Collection relating to service of 1050 Sergeant Leslie Sydney Horder, 1 Light Horse Regiment. Collection consists of five original handwritten diaries, containing regular entries covering: sea voyage to Egypt, training, and active service on Gallipoli from 28 September to evacuation on 19 December. Continues with service as a machine gunner during campaigns in Sinai and Palestine, including the battles at Romani, Gaza, Beersheba, and the advance up the Jordan valley. Comments on natives, terrain and weather conditions, periods of continuous contact with Turkish forces and skirmishes with Bedouin tribes. The diaries also cover leave in Jerusalem, Cairo and after the Armistice in England and France, hospitalisation with malaria and dysentery, inspections and addresses by senior commanders including Chauvel, riots in Egypt in early 1919, and final return to Australia.
