Description

An aerial view showing newly dug trenches of the Hindenburg Line, illustrating the condition of these defences at the time of the first attack by the 4th Australian Division. The dark rectangular bands are belts of barbed wire of great width. The enemy intended to construct concrete shelters behind these wire trenches but the idea was later abandoned. On 11 April 1917 the 12th Infantry Brigade assaulted the sector shown. Map reference 4AE.1693. 51b. U. 22d.28b.
