Description

The remains of a headstone, cut from slate from the surrounding hills, placed on the common grave of Staff Sergeant James Mitchell of Tenterfield, NSW who died of wounds on 17 August 1900; Trooper James Daniel Duff of Tringha, NSW, who was killed in action on 4 August 1900; Trooper James Edward Walker and Trooper John Waddell who were also killed in action on 17 August, 1900 at Elands River, Transvaal. The headstone was later replaced by four permanent grave markers. The original stone is on display in the Australian War Memorial.
