Gun crew on duty at Fort Gellibrand. This staged photograph displays all members of the crew as they might work. The gunner at left is manning a semaphore, the gunner beside him is using a telescope. Other members of the crew are grouped around the 6-pdr (2.244-inch) Nordenfelt QF [Quick Fire] gun. A bugle boy, holding his bugle has another slung around his back, stands beside the gun platform. The gunner at right mans the range indicator which was used by the Range Control Officer who is situated at some distance away to check the angle of the gun. The two officers at the front of the railing look at a chart. The man at the left holding the chart is probably John Monash; the officer on his right is probably Captain Miller – Battery Commander of the North Melbourne Garrison Artillery at Fort Gellibrand. In October 1896 Monash was promoted to Captain and given command of the North Melbourne Garrison Artillery at Fort Gellibrand. Major Outtrim was overall Unit Commandant. The areas near the two men standing to attention, below the gun crew, are magazine traps used for ammunition storage.
