Description

Studio portrait of 2nd Lieutenant James Francis Thomas, A Squadron, New South Wales Citizen's Bushmen, Mounted Infantry Regiment. By the outbreak of the Boer War, Thomas was 38, a successful lawyer, newspaper proprietor, commander of the district's volunteer forces and a considerable figure in Tenterfield social and political life. On 28 February 1900, Major James Francis Thomas, Officer Commanding A Squadron of the New South Wales Contingent of Citizen's Bushmen, sailed with his men for South Africa. A practising lawer prior to his departure for South Africa, he was given the role of defending officer at the Courts Martial of Lieutenant (Lt) Henry 'Harry' Morant and Lt Peter Handcock.
