United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Boeing B-17F bomber, serial number 42-5872 in-flight. During the war the USAAF did not place the first digit of the unique serial number on the tails of their aircraft, hence why the serial only appears to have '25872' on the vertical stabiliser (tail).
This particular aircraft was delivered from the factory in Long Beach California by Lockheed/Vega on 5 April 1943. It was then flown to Tulsa in Oklahoma for conversion to a crew trainer TB-40 on 13 April 1943. The aircraft survived the war and was sold for scrap metal on 19 December 1945.
