Description

Depicts a portrait of Brigadier-General Sydney Charles Edgar Herring (1881-1951), DSO, Commanding 13th Brigade, in full uniform, wearing a cap. Herring was born in Granville, Sydney and after a private school education, became a real estate agent. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 1st Australian Infantry in March 1904 was appointed to the AIF in October 1914. He served with the 13th Infantry Battalion, travelled to Egypt and landed at Anzac in April 1915. He was slightly wounded in May 1915 and in October 1915 was evacuated to Egypt sick. In 1916 he fought at Pozieres and awarded a Distinguished Service Order (DSO) . In October 1917 he took over command of the 4th Training Group in England and in June 1918, having returned to France, he became commander of the 13th Infantry Brigade. Returning to Australia, Herring resumed his career as a real estate agent and ran unsuccessfully for the Senate as a Nationalist in 1924.
