Interrogation of a prisoner
English officer JJW Herbertson is shown interviewing a German soldier in the officer's living quarters at Montauban, north of the Somme. The German soldier is seated on a wooden crate, while the officer sits on his bed, with a note book on his knee. JJW Herbertson was a friend of CEW Bean and after the First World War he translated captured German material for the Australian government, which is now the basis of the Australian War Memorial's Research Library. Will Dyson was the first Australian official war artist to visit the front during the First World War, travelling to France in December 1916, remaining there until May 1917, making records of the Australian involvement in the war. He was formally appointed as an official war artist, attached to the AIF, in May 1917, working in France and London throughout the war. His commission was terminated in March 1920.
