Easter dawn and anti-Christ
Depicts a caricature of Kaiser Wilhelm II amid wreckage and chaos. One of his feet rests on a skull and the other on a broken column, symbolising the death of civilisation. He holds a sword and globe in hands, and sits on drum. The cartoon was originally published in the 'Daily Sketch', London, 21 April 1916, p.4 with the following caption;'Good Friday! Ugh! This day 2,000 years ago my forerunners failed'. Will Dyson was the first Australian official war artist to visit the front during the First World War, travelling to France in December 1916, remaining there until May 1917, making records of the Australian involvement in the war. He was formally appointed as an official war artist, attached to the AIF, in May 1917, working in France and London throughout the war. His commission was terminated in March 1920.
