Description
Depicts an image of the German Kaiser, in full uniform, wearing a helmet and cape, reading the London newspaper 'The Daily Epileptic'. Standing next to him is a gentleman wearing a manacle holding a book titled 'Anti Germanic Allies'. This cartoon was published in the London 'Daily News' on 13 July 1915 with the following caption; 'The Kaiser (with English stinking fish newspaper - sadly!) The contemptible English! Alas! I, German Emperor, failed quite to convince the German nations of that! The other: 'True sire, but if only English editors are more successful in their efforts to convince their Allied Nations of it!'. Dyson's series of caricatures and distinctive, biting satire aimed at war were primarily directed at Kaiser Wilhelm and epitomised the prevailing anti-German sentiment. Will Dyson was the first Australian official war artist to visit the front during the First World War, travelling to France in December 1916, remaining there until May 1917, making records of the Australian involvement in the war. He was formally appointed as an official war artist, attached to the AIF, in May 1917, working in France and London throughout the war. His commission was terminated in March 1920.
