Description

Depicts a bare, undulating landscape with the remains of animals in the foreground. There are two horses on top of the hill on the right of the image. In February 1918, Lambert visited the ANZAC Mounted Headquarters in the Jewish settlement town of Ayunkara (now called Richon le Zion). As ANZAC forces moved up from the south of Palestine towards Jerusalem in November of the previous year, Ayunkara had been the site of a significant action between New Zealand and Turkish forces. As a reminder that this is a battle site Lambert has contrasted the pastoral landscape with the bleached animal bones in the foreground.
