Sunrise over the Dead Sea, from headquarters, Desert corps
Description
Depicts a landscape with dark undulating hills in the foreground, the blue water of the Dead Sea in the middle ground, and the mauve mountains in the distance. George Lambert painted this in February 1918 during his first tour of Palestine. In late February Lambert arrived in Jerusalem; he found the landscape inspiring, particularly the expansive views from the Mount of Olives towards the Dead Sea. He painted two panels in the gardens of the Kaiserin Augusta Victoria Hospice, once the German headquarters but then recently occupied by the British.
