Ford over the Jordan at Jisr Benat Yakub
Description
Depicts a scene of a ford over the Jordan River at Jisr Benat Yakub. A close up view of an Arab seated with goats and a donkey beneath a dark green sprawling tree, beside the Jordan river. To the left is the Jordan River and the opposite bank. Low horizon with pale cloudy sky.
Lambert was in the Middle East from 13 January 1918 to June 1918. He went with Charles Bean on the Historical Mission to Gallipoli in February-March 1919, after which he revisited Palestine. This work is described in Lambert's rough catalogue entry as 'Scene of Ford across Jordan. Ref 3rd Brigade and Lieut. Herbert also Lucas just below Lake Hule; Note attack was at night. This sketch for souvenir only'.
Lambert visited Jisr Benat Yakub between 9 and 14 June 1919. Lambert wrote to his wife on 9 June at Jisr Benat Yakob: 'This afternoon, with my tall scout - a real scout of the Third Brigade - I have done a reconnaissance of the two places I am to paint and really they are wonderful: one a fording-place of the Jordan just below Lake Beheirit el Hule, the Lake Hills and Mount Hermen in background.'
