Watercolour sketch from artist's sketchbook attached to scrapbook leaf, depicting the Somme battlefields, near Delville Wood. In the foreground is a large shell casing. A cross in the centre of the sketch marks out a grave plot in the undulating, war-ravaged terrain. War damaged and shell blasted trees scatter the landscape against a bleak sky. Delville Wood was the site of an intense battle between British and German troops during the Battle of the Somme in 1916, the wood changing hands a number of times during that period.
