Australian squadron in Blanche Bay, New Britain
Description
An urgent task undertaken by Australia after the outbreak of war, August 1914, was the occupation of German New Guinea and other German Pacific outposts. The Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force was quickly raised and despatched to New Britain, landing near the German capital, Rabaul, seizing the powerful radio station and later forcing the surrender of the German government throughout New Guinea. The force was escorted on the mission by the battle-cruiser HMAS Australia and ships of the Australian Squadron, seen here at anchor of Rabaul with the French cruiser, Montcalm.
