Created in approximately the 13th to 14th Century, the sitting lion is one of a pair originally on one of the city gates of Ypres. The lions were donated to the Commonwealth of Australia by the Burgomaster of Ypres in 1936. The lions each hold the Ypres Coat of Arms.
