Description

This painting symbolically depicts the aftermath of battle in France. A figure in a hooded gown stands with their head bent, ruined buildings are visible in the background. John Power enlisted in the British Forces and served in the Royal Medical Corps from April 1917 until the end of the war when he turned his attention to full time art studies. It is likely that this work drew upon his wartime experiences of the Third and Fourth Battles of Ypres 1917-1918.
