In honor of the late Major W. Redmond, M.P., Patriot
Description
Two soldiers bow their heads respectfully over the body of an officer. Major William Hoey Kearney Redmond was an Irish nationalist who supported the push for Home Rule and was a parliamentary member of the Irish Parliamentary Party for 34 years. He was one of the first to volunteer to join the (Irish) National Volunteers in the First World War. Redmond died in June 1917 while leading his men during the Battle of Messines. At his death there was widespread grief, especially in Ireland and Britain. This is highlighted in the work by the two soldiers - one from the Nationalist side and the other from the Ulster side, which were in opposition in Ireland.
