The dangerous years
Depicts a male figure dressed in a female Roman warrior outfit. The figure is holding the Kaiser in a headlock and a spear in the other hand which is dripping with blood.
Accompanied by the text 'The Dangerous Year (in the fourth year of marriage, ' And do you still love me as you did before we married?') the figures represent Bellona the Roman goddess of war and the German ruler Kaiser Wilhelm II. As a figurative works it is a commentary on the hold the war has over the German ruler and the influence it is having over his ability to govern.
Norman Lindsay (1879-1969) was a painter, draughtsman, illustrator, cartoonist, printmaker, writer and sculptor. He joined the Sydney 'Bulletin' magazine as a staff artist, 1901-09, 1910-23 and 1932-58. During the First World War he produced jingoistic cartoons and pro-conscription posters. Published in the Sydney 'Bulletin' magazine on 16 August 1917, this illustration is part of the series of war cartoons Norman Lindsay generated during the First World War.
