Description

Measuring 1750 metres in elevation and dominating the Torokina landscape, Mount Bagana was, and continues to be, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. According to Abbott's observations, the volcano was usually seen best early in the day, and steam seemed to come out of great fissures rather than from a crater. The vehicle park pictured in the drawing is in a flat area washed out of the fine, grey pummice sand by a stream. These washouts were characteristic of the region. In the park are staff cars and jeeps, two of the jeeps on an improvised ramp are receiving maintenance work.
