Description

Two members of the Royal Australian Navy rendering a Japanese mine that washed up on Melville Island safe. The detonator of these mines usually withdraws when breaking adrift but failed to operate due to heavy marine growth, mainly around the detonator. One horn was broken on this mine, rendering it extremely dangerous to handle. The two men are from the Rendering Mines Safe Unit, standing is Petty Officer C Nichols and kneeling is Lieutenant Frederick Bray.
