Maintenancing 'Matildas', 1
One of three studies of Armoured Fighting Vehicle fitters doing maintenance work on a Matilda Mark IV tank.
A Matilda Mark IV tank of the 2/9 Australian Armoured Regiment is shown, three quarter rear view, with its gear box and racham louvers raised to enable the Armoured Fighting Vehicle fitter to get at the engines and gear box. Another fitter is working on the tank suspension. The tracks have been partially removed and it is jacked up on the nearer side with three hydraulic jacks. A track belonging to another vehicle is to be seen in the mid foreground and in the near foreground is part of a Wilson gear box. Part of two other tanks are shown with their canvas covers on, waiting for attention. Other details to note are the final drive wheels at the rear and one half of the radiator raised behind the fitter.
