Tactial Headquarters, Martin's Knoll
Description
After the taking of Artillery Ridge, it was necessary to move Tactical Headquarters from down in the valley which was too far away. The Headquarters was moved forward to Barges Hill and later, when 25th Australian Infantry Battalion took over, to Martin's Knoll. Here the ground falls away steeply and there is a fine view of both of the island's volcanoes, as the knoll is almost on a direct line between them. A two man tent is in the foreground and various personal gear is hung on convenient places outside, owing to the lack of space inside. The trees show the effects of previous shell fire, and Native boys are shown carrying a wounded man down to the Advanced Dressing Station on an improvised stretcher.
