Second portable hospital, USA (Captain Carl Hammer, Sergeant Fred Gaspar and First Lieutenant F Eldridge)
Description
A hospital designed to provide definite treatment close to the front. The personnel have been taken from various organised hospitals of the U.S Medical Corps. The surgeon here is exploring a gunshot wound suffered by an Australian infantryman during the battle for Buna. The assistant surgeon is swabbing the wound. The orderly sergeant is giving the anaethesia and holding a torch on the abdominal operation. From left:- Captain Carl A Hammer, surgeon, Sergeant Fred Gaspar, orderly sergeant and anaesthetist, First Lieutenant F Eldridge, assistant surgeon, A bottle containing Plasma is hanging to the right of the lights, and a tube leads from the bottle to the patient's right arm, Buna, New Guinea.
