Telegraph Room at Signals Centre
The inside of a signal station, including telegraphists and a dispatch rider in the 89 Australian Operating Section, Advanced Land Headquarters Signals. Seated in the foreground are Signaller Lorna Mae Walker (VF346945) operating the Teleprinter, and Signaller Jean Isabel McCoy (NF409762) who distributes messages that have been handed in, to the appropriate operator for despatch. On the other table are operators Corporal Frances Jane Mearns-King (NF409700) and on the opposite side of the table Corporal Anne Millar Mitchell (VF346699), sending messages by Fullerphone. Seated at the desk is Sergeant Ernest Bradley Farmer (VX119466) whose duty is superintendent. Signaller J S McDonald (VX5351), a despatch rider, is waiting in the doorway; he wears an Africa Star ribbon. Through the window are seen two clerks sorting mail for the despatch rider letter service; they are Signaller Mary Martha McDonald (VF388397) and Signaller Violet Joycelyn McIlroy (NF409677). The door on the right opens into a telephone exchange. The building was formerly used as a Chinese residence, and was originally used as a general store.
