Wrapping the dead in army blankets
Description
The scene is of a group of Australian soldiers carrying their dead in blue army blankets and stretchers on board the deck of a torpedoed Landing Ship, Tank at Morobe, Papua New Guinea. One of the ships in the convoy on the way to Lae was hit by a torpedo launched from a Japanese plane in September 1943. This work was started while Mainwaring was working as an artist for the Military History Section (MHS, Melbourne) in May - Oct 1943. However, the work has been dated '44 indicating that Mainwaring most likely finished it upon his return to Australia as an official war artist.
