Operation in a field hospital
Description
Depicts an unidentified surgeon, anaesthetist, assistant (all from the Australian Army Medical Service) and patient preparing for a surgical procedure in a field hospital, New Guinea. Dargie noted, "This sketch was painted more or less unseriously from one of the 'freak' photographs sent to Capt Nicholson. It is done in a slightly 'Dobellish' technique, but the proportions of the figures have not been sufficiently exaggerated. Perhaps I shall do another of the same sort but more so, before I leave this week, to show that even such a dull realist as myself can distort as well as the next man if he wants to."
