Co-pilot of Catalina (Warrant Officer Charles Thoday)
Description
Depicts 410179 Warrant Officer Charles J Thoday, RAAF, co-pilot of a Catalina flying boat of the Royal Australian Air Force, No 205 Squadron. With one hand on the pitch control, Thoday's intense gaze into the sky suggests an ascending angle of attack. Thoday trained in the Empire Air Training Scheme in Canada and was posted to the 205 Squadron in June 1944. He was born in 1922 in East Brighton, Victoria. He his depicted here with one hand holding the wheel attached to the yoke or joystick, positioned for climbing. While his left hand is raised to adjust the pitch control which sets the pitch of the aircrews. It is a tight area in which he sits.
