Burnt out oil tanks, Balikpapan
Description
The pre-landing bombardment and strafing of the 7th Australian Division wrought such damage that for some distance there could be seen nothing but ruined buildings, blackened coconut plantations and charred ground. This picture shows some of the oil tanks, whose metal had been wrapped into fantastic shapes and burned to strange colours by the heat, Borneo.
