Dutch interior, Changi
Description
Soldiers from the Netherlands East Indies Army were captured by the Japanese on Java and later transferred to Singapore where they were imprisoned in Changi. Completed shortly after the liberation of the camp in August 1945, this work depicts a group of thin Dutch prisoners resting in the darkened interior of a timber barracks. They are probably awaiting transportation to either Australia or Holland, where many Dutch prisoners of war were sent for rehabilitation prior to their repatriation home.
